    Immigrant Students

Here is a message from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond reguarding immigrant families:

    October 23, 2025

Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

Reminder of Legislation and Guidance: Immigration Enforcement Rapid Response

All children in the United States, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, have a right to a public education.
As Bay Area educators, staff, students, and families navigate the fear and uncertainty brought by threats of immigration raids, I want to commend the bravery of our educators and school staff who are following existing laws and procedures to make sure that every child's right to a public education is protected.

Let's be clear: Immigration enforcement has no place in our schools. I sponsored Assembly Bill 49 (Muratsuchi) and Senate Bill 98 (Perez) to keep immigration enforcement off our school campuses and to make sure that families are notified in the case that any immigration enforcement agents are present on a school site.

As a reminder, the California Department of Education (CDE) has issued a toolkit to support local educational agencies to follow existing laws regarding the rights of students from immigrant families. Our Schools: Resources for Including Immigrant Families provides family-facing posters that communicate assurance of all schools' obligation to provide every child with access to education and a safe learning environment, regardless of immigration status, as well as guidance for best practices when immigration agents are present on school sites. We encourage all California schools to make these resources visible and accessible to families.
The Our Schools toolkit is currently available in English and Spanish on the CDE Resources to Include Immigrant Families web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/pf/if/immigration-toolkit.asp.

The guidance in this toolkit reflects existing law and responds to the realities that one in two children in California have at least one parent who is an immigrant, one in five children in California have parents whose immigration statuses differ from each other, and 93 percent of the children in mixed-status families are U.S. citizens.

For further information about resources to include immigrant families and their students in California schools, please visit the CDE Including Immigrant Families web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/pf/if/.

    Sincerely,
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond

The Geyserville Unified School Board members are elected by the community and serve two and four-year terms. The Board has responsibilities, as defined in the Education Code, to:

    • establish the educational philosophy
    • make policy to provide overall guidelines
    • employ personnel
    • adopt budget and approve expenditures
    • set rules and regulations for governing administration
    • adopt curriculum
    • evaluate the education process
The Geyserville USD 2026 Board Governance Handbook outlines our district's governance practices.

Additionally, this CSBA Quick Reference Guide will outline board purpose and responsibility. Information and updates are listed on CSBA Effective Governance: Resources, Training and Support page.

How to Place an Item on the Agenda

Members of the public may request that items be placed on the agenda of any regular Board of Education meeting.

The request must be in writing and be submitted to the Superintendent mbeebe@gusd.com with supporting documents and information, if any, at least ten working days prior to the scheduled meeting date.

When constructing the agenda, the Board President and the Superintendent will decide whether the request is within the subject matter jurisdiction of the Board and whether the agenda item is appropriate for discussion in open or closed session.

Public Notice of Vacancy and Provisional Appointment

The foundation of effective governance is the common focus governing board members share that transcends individual differences to fulfill a greater purpose. A unity of purpose exists when the commitment to achieving these goals becomes the guiding principle for all trustees.

Do you live in the boundaries of the Geyserville Unified School District and have an interest in equitable and fiduciarily responsible education?

Our school board is looking for enthusiastic individuals to apply to fill a provisional appointment from date of appointment to November 2026. This is an opportunity to serve in the decision-making processes that impact students, teachers, and families in our community.
Whether you're a parent, educator, or community member, your voice and dedication are crucial in guiding the direction of our schools.

A vacancy in the membership of the Governing Board of the Geyserville Unified School District has occurred by reason of the resignation of Mrs. Sara Lopez effective February 4, 2026. The resignation was filed in the office of the Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools on February 4, 2026. Public education is vital to the health of communities. School board members are responsible for ensuring that a school district's public education system is serving the needs of all students by providing equitable access to a high-quality education.

Thank you for your interest in serving our community.
